U.S. Commerce Department Imposes Export Controls on Anthropic Models on June 12, Triggering Shift to Chinese AI; Global Access Resumes July 8

According to Nikkei Asia, on June 12 the U.S. Commerce Department imposed strict export controls on Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models, citing national security and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Unable to verify user citizenship globally, Anthropic suspended access for all international users. Facing operational disruption, numerous U.S. firms and global enterprises turned to Chinese open-source AI models as alternatives. The Commerce Department subsequently rescinded the ban after Anthropic deployed enhanced security measures. Global access restoration begins July 8.
